8/29/2023 0 Comments Atomic number 9![]() Fluorine has no known metabolic role in mammals a few plants and sea sponges synthesize organofluorine poisons (most often monofluoroacetates) that help deter predation. Organofluorine compounds often persist in the environment due to the strength of the carbon–fluorine bond. Global fluorochemical sales amount to more than US$69 billion a year.įluorocarbon gases are generally greenhouse gases with global-warming potentials 100 to 23,500 times that of carbon dioxide, and SF 6 has the highest global warming potential of any known substance. The fluoride ion from dissolved fluoride salts inhibits dental cavities, and so finds use in toothpaste and water fluoridation. Pharmaceuticals such as atorvastatin and fluoxetine contain C−F bonds. Molecules containing a carbon–fluorine bond often have very high chemical and thermal stability their major uses are as refrigerants, electrical insulation and cookware, and PTFE (Teflon). The rest of the fluorite is converted into corrosive hydrogen fluoride en route to various organic fluorides, or into cryolite, which plays a key role in aluminium refining. ![]() Owing to the expense of refining pure fluorine, most commercial applications use fluorine compounds, with about half of mined fluorite used in steelmaking. Industrial production of fluorine gas for uranium enrichment, its largest application, began during the Manhattan Project in World War II. Only in 1886 did French chemist Henri Moissan isolate elemental fluorine using low-temperature electrolysis, a process still employed for modern production. Proposed as an element in 1810, fluorine proved difficult and dangerous to separate from its compounds, and several early experimenters died or sustained injuries from their attempts. Fluorite, the primary mineral source of fluorine which gave the element its name, was first described in 1529 as it was added to metal ores to lower their melting points for smelting, the Latin verb fluo meaning 'flow' gave the mineral its name. As the most electronegative reactive element, it is extremely reactive, as it reacts with all other elements except for the light inert gases.Īmong the elements, fluorine ranks 24th in universal abundance and 13th in terrestrial abundance. It is the lightest halogen and exists at standard conditions as a highly toxic, pale yellow diatomic gas.

8/29/2023 0 Comments Orange and tangerine![]() Citrus fruits-among them the bitter orange-were introduced to Sicily in the 9th century during the period of the Emirate of Sicily, but the sweet orange was unknown until the late 15th century or the beginnings of the 16th century, when Italian and Portuguese merchants brought orange trees into the Mediterranean area. In Europe, the Moors introduced the orange to the Iberian Peninsula, which was known as Al-Andalus, with large-scale cultivation starting in the 10th century, as evidenced by complex irrigation techniques specifically adapted to support orange orchards. The earliest mention of the sweet orange in Chinese literature dates from 314 BC. Sweet oranges have a distinct origin from the bitter orange, which arose independently, perhaps in the wild, from a cross between pure mandarin and pomelo parents. All varieties of the sweet orange descend from this prototype cross, differing only by mutations selected for during agricultural propagation. Based on genomic analysis, the relative proportions of the ancestral species in the sweet orange are approximately 42% pomelo and 58% mandarin. Since its chloroplast DNA is that of pomelo, it was likely the hybrid pomelo, perhaps a BC1 pomelo backcross, that was the maternal parent of the first orange. The sweet orange is not a wild fruit, having arisen in domestication from a cross between a non-pure mandarin orange and a hybrid pomelo that had a substantial mandarin component. Yellow Oranges and Green Tangerines by Zhao Lingrang, Chinese fan painting from the Song dynasty ( NPM) In 2019, 79 million tonnes of oranges were grown worldwide, with Brazil producing 22% of the total, followed by China and India. As of 2012, sweet oranges accounted for approximately 70% of citrus production. The fruit of the orange tree can be eaten fresh, or processed for its juice or fragrant peel. Orange trees are widely grown in tropical and subtropical climates for their sweet fruit. ![]() As of 1987, orange trees were found to be the most cultivated fruit tree in the world. The orange originated in a region encompassing Southern China, Northeast India, and Myanmar, and the earliest mention of the sweet orange was in Chinese literature in 314 BC. The sweet orange has had its full genome sequenced. The chloroplast genome, and therefore the maternal line, is that of pomelo. ![]() The orange is a hybrid between pomelo ( Citrus maxima) and mandarin ( Citrus reticulata). 8/29/2023 0 Comments Falcon bird of prey![]() “One of the most spectacular hunts I’ve ever seen is from the power station chimneys. If a particularly large flock breaks away, “it gets too much for the peregrines and they are off in pursuit”, says Morrison. As we gaze at the peregrine, flocks of feral pigeons scurry through the air just below her. Alongside his nest sites, an all-you-can-eat urban buffet is the main reason the birds are thriving. They hunt at dawn, before work starts at 8am, and then “sit up there watching the world go by”, says Morrison. Peregrine falcon chicks at nesting in London. “They will even hunt from the cranes here. “There are very few other species that would adapt and wouldn’t just go,” says Morrison. “It’s nature, isn’t it? You can’t predict what they are going to do.” But the birds took up residence in his new nestbox and have successfully bred there ever since. ![]() When the birds finished breeding that year, Morrison closed off their old nest and waited. The Battersea Power Station Development Company spent more than £100,000 on a relocation plan, building the mast at exactly the same height as the old nest in the quietest corner of the construction site. Battersea’s peregrines nested just below one of its famous towers but the chimneys needed to be taken down and rebuilt as part of the power station’s transformation. Six years ago, he retired and became a full-time peregrine consultant and ecologist. Once they “hold” a territory, they sometimes struggle to breed successfully without a purpose-built nestbox, so Morrison provided some. Under his watch, pairs of this fiercely territorial bird have taken up residence on high buildings. He contacted Natural England, the government’s wildlife watchdog, and began surveying urban peregrines. He’d always loved birds, and knew that this rare bird enjoys the highest legal protection. He was a steel fixer on a construction site in Battersea when he discovered they were nesting in the then derelict power station. Morrison is one of the reasons for the peregrine boom in London, alongside volunteers for the London Peregrine Partnership, which also monitors the birds. She’s in her prime,” says Morrison, admiringly. Over the past three years, this bird has successfully fledged 11 chicks. And the female is a third bigger than the male. Peregrines will bully and sometimes kill much bigger birds, from buzzards to crows. This alpha female is the most powerful wild bird in London. When the -a flag is specified, packets are copied directly from each input file to the output file, independent of each frame’s timestamp. Mergecap assumes that frames within a single capture file are already stored in chronological order.
